Making the dollars fit

So what happened to the internal budget and the thought the Stars could not spend more than $3 million on a free agent?

Well, they pushed both of those boundaries by signing Sean Avery to a four-year deal at $3.875 million _ and, as such, they are tight up against it in regards to the salary cap.

If you include Fabian Brunnstrom (and I believe their plan is to include him), then Dallas is at 21 players and $55.7 million in cap space. That means they have to get one or two more players in at about $500,000 apiece. They will probably go with a 22-man roster a bunch (as they have done in the past) or simply bank on the fact that Brunnstrom won't make all of his bonuses.

As far as the internal budget goes, they aren't spending all of the money they have committed to the cap. Mike Modano has a cap hit of $3.45 million, but really is only making $2.25 million (because of a long-term deal in which he will see his salary drop from $4.5 million last season). Thus, in terms of budget, he saves them about $1.2 million (or down to $54.5). Brunnstrom (the young free agent who signed in the spring with the Stars) has an incentive-filled contract, so nobody really expects him to make all $2.25 million of it. If he were to make $1.3 million, that would put them at $53.5 million in actual cash spent.

Newsletter questions, anyone?

I have received a lot of good questions recently, so I thought I would sprinkle them in on the blog throughout the summer. Here's one from Jim

Q: Mike, I was trying to think of what the top 12 will look like next season, and I am baffled. It seems like we are very lefty-heavy, so someone will have to play the off-wing. Is Avery that guy?

If so, I could see this as our lineup:

LW-C-RW
1 Morrow-Ribiero-Lehtinen
2 Brunnstrom-Richards-Eriksson
3 Ott-Modano-Avery
4 Lundqvist-Petersen-Conner/Barch

Any thoughts? Jim

PS - Avery - Ott - Barch would be fun to watch.
